Tried to smooth the seat for the alder chair this morning. Because of the cheap piece of garbage Harbor freight workbench I got, it is in worse shape than when I started!
No mater what I tried I could not get the built in vice to hold the board securely. Did not notice it was lifting up while I was using the power planer now I have grooves in the seat.
I don't know how I am gonna fix it yet. I was so angry I didn't get pics of the groves but here are a couple showing how I was trying to clamp it down to the bench.
Neither way worked and now I have even more work to get it smooth. If you just need a general use bench then this one is ok, just don't expect to use the vise it comes with for much and the bench dogs are a joke.
What I need it a real, Old School woodworker's bench.
I am thinking of turning this one into a stool and starting over on the chair with a new seat.
Trying to keep the underside natural looks to be a mistake.
