So Monday I decided since it was nice I would ride the scooter to work.
I got about a third of the way there and the bike suddenly started making a grinding noise.
Pulled over and isolated the noise to the transmission.
Limped the bike back home.
Parked the bike and drove the truck.
Fast forward to today.
I started taking the bike apart, hoping that the problem was just a bad belt.

Time to start disassembly. |
|
Outer covers off. |
|
Inside of outer cover. |
|
Inner cover removed. Note gasket is still stuck on. |
|
Gasket and outer drive pulley removed. |
|
Inside of inner cover. |
Nope.
The belt is worn but the real problem is the rear (driven) pulley.
It has two parts, a fixed face and a movable face that keeps the belt tight.
The movable half of the pulley has cracked and broken free from the hub.
|
Crack in the movable pulley. |
|
Movable pulley is broken away from hub.
As it is the 4th of July, the local bike shop (If you can call Seattle local to me) is closed.
If I order the parts online it is gonna cost me about $170 for the broken half of the pulley and a new belt.
I would like to see if the bike shop can get the entire clutch/pulley assembly.
It would cost more but then I would know that nothing else is about to fail in it and that it is put together properly.
Either way I go, who knows how long the bike is going to be down.
I am getting really sick and tired of the bike breaking every summer. I don't ride during the winter/bad weather so summer is the only time I can get much riding in.
This is the second summer I have had the bike and it has been broken both times!
And what really sucks is I am still paying on the loan to get the bike!
Never again will I buy a bike, new or used from Brothers Powersports in Bremerton, WA.
And I have not had good experiences with their service department either.
Anyway, Happy 4th of July to everyone.
Hopefully yours is better than mine has been so far.
